Background of the Study
Academic performance in secondary schools often depends on various factors, such as the quality of teaching, access to learning resources, and students’ ability to self-study. In Yola North Local Government Area, Adamawa State, many students face challenges in accessing additional academic support outside the classroom, which can affect their overall performance. Limited access to tutors, as well as time constraints, often prevent students from receiving the necessary academic help.
The development of a mobile-based tutoring system offers a flexible and accessible solution. This system will allow students to receive personalized tutoring support through their smartphones, providing access to instructional materials, practice questions, and interactive learning tools. Using mobile technology, students can access tutoring services anytime and anywhere, facilitating continuous learning and reducing the pressure of traditional learning methods. The mobile platform would be developed using Java for the Android application, incorporating interactive features such as video tutorials, quizzes, and live chats with tutors.
Statement of the Problem
In Yola North, many students do not have access to quality tutoring outside school hours, which negatively impacts their academic performance. This limitation results in students struggling to grasp key concepts, especially in subjects that require additional explanation beyond the classroom.
Objectives of the Study
To design and develop a mobile-based tutoring system that provides academic support to secondary school students in Yola North Local Government Area.
To assess the impact of the mobile-based tutoring system on students' academic performance in key subjects.
To evaluate students' satisfaction with the usability and effectiveness of the mobile tutoring system.
Research Questions
How does the mobile-based tutoring system impact students' academic performance in secondary schools in Yola North?
What features of the mobile-based tutoring system do students find most useful for improving their academic performance?
How do students perceive the usability and accessibility of the mobile tutoring system?
Research Hypotheses
The use of the mobile-based tutoring system will significantly improve students' academic performance in key subjects.
Students will find features such as interactive quizzes and live tutoring sessions to be most beneficial.
Students will report high satisfaction with the usability and accessibility of the mobile-based tutoring system.
Significance of the Study
This study will enhance academic performance in secondary schools by providing students in Yola North Local Government Area with the tools they need to improve their knowledge and skills. By increasing accessibility to tutoring, the system will empower students to perform better in their exams and engage more effectively with the curriculum.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the design, development, and implementation of a mobile-based tutoring system for secondary school students in Yola North Local Government Area, Adamawa State. The study will evaluate the system’s impact on academic performance and student satisfaction. Limitations include potential barriers to mobile access for some students and issues related to the availability of tutors.
